Madonna Outfits

Madonna is undoubtedly one of the most well-known figures of the 1980s, 90s, and even early 2000s. It is difficult to pinpoint any one style when it comes to Madonna outfits, because she has been part of – or spearhead of – so many different fashion statements. If you are going to emulate Madonna for Halloween or a costume party, you have many choices!

In the early 80s, Madonna had the neon-and-prints look down. This is the look that many people associate with the 80s. All you have to do to get this look is layer denim and neon colors everywhere, and accessorize with big hair, dozens of rubber bracelets, and a hair ribbon. Or, you could get the “Like a Virgin” look of Madonna’s outfits by obtaining a white lingerie corset top, which you can find at any thrift store, and pairing it with a crinoline-type fluffy white skirt, long, lacey opera gloves, and big crimped hair.

For Madonna’s late-80s look, a black bustier is the only necessary ingredient. Pair that with some fishnets, and make sure to do some push-ups, because Madonna’s buff arms were as much a part of this look as anything else. Then, the 90s came along, and her bustier love only grew. Here comes the pointy bust! You can create this look with any non-padded bustier top by inserting a bit of cardboard in the bust. Then, just set your hair in some curlers and make some moves!

In the mid-to-late 90s, Madonna became increasingly interested in Eastern cultures and religions. You may have heard about the Kabbalah, a religion with Jewish origins, which she brought to America’s attention. For this look, simply don a traditional sari, but be sure to add Madonna’s signature layers of jewelry. Then in the early 2000s, Madonna’s outfits took a turn for the punk. For this look, wear some mismatched plaid, including a kilt, plus some accessories like studded belts, mesh, and plenty of grunge.

When it comes to dressing like Madonna, the bottom line is: never be predictable. Take cues from her closet and include bustiers, sharp edges, silver and gold accessories, religious symbols and fashions, luxurious fabrics, and plenty of skin. Perhaps the skin Madonna showed was as much part of her outfit as Madonna’s outfits themselves. She was always pushing the envelope, and appeared to revel in the thrill of making people uneasy. If you have the guts to go to a costume party dressed in a Madonna outfit, you had better go all out! These costumes may take a bit more preparation than the average Halloween costume, and a bit more gathering, but the reactions from your friends will be well worth the time and price.
